Allergic Rhinitis may be seasonal or perennial

Allergic rhinitis, is a type of inflammation in the nose which occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air.It is also known as hay fever, Allergic rhinitis is a diagnosis associated with a group of symptoms affecting the nose.

The two types of allergic rhinitis are seasonal and perennial

  • Seasonal allergies usually occur during the spring and fall season in response of pollens
  • Perennial allergies can occur year round, or at any time during the year in response to indoor substances

Signs and symptoms

  • stuffy nose,
  • Nasal Secretion  (rhinorrhea)
  • sneezing,
  • sneezing fits
  • red,
  • itchy,
  • watery eyes,
  • Nose fluid
  • and swelling around the eyes
  • conjunctival swelling and erythema,
  • eyelid swelling,
  • lower eyelid venous stasis
  • wollen nasal turbinates,
  • and middle ear effusion.

Risk factors associated with Allergic Rhintis

  • Asthma
  • Allergic conjunctivitis
  • atopic dermatatis
  • cigarette smoke
  • chemicals
  • cold temperatures
  • humidity
  • wind
  • air pollution
  • hairspray
  • perfumes
  • colognes
  • wood smoke
  • fumes


  • Allergic rhinitis triggered by the pollens of specific seasonal plants. Possible triggers include grass, pollen, dust mites, cockroaches, cigarette smoke, and perfume.


One way to prevent allergic rhinitis is to wear a respirator or mask when near potential allergens.

Medication :

  • Antihistamines
    • Some popular over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines include:
      • fexofenadine (Allegra)
      • diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
      • desloratadine (Clarinex)
      • loratadine (Claritin)
      • levocetirizine (Xyzal)
      • cetirizine (Zyrtec)
  • Steroids Like Corticosteroids
  • Eye drops and nasal sprays
  • Allergen immunotherapy
  • Other measures that may be used second line include: decongestants, cromolyn, leukotriene receptor antagonists

Tips to prevent allergic rhinitis. 

  • Chew 2 to 3 raw garlic cloves daily to combat the various symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
  • Clean bathtubs and showers monthly.
  • Use respiratory masks
