Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness, tingling, weakness in hand, due to compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist at the carpal tunnel. The median nerve controls movement and feeling in thumb and first three fingers.

Causes of Carpal tunnel syndrome

Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome is unknown, may be it is associated with other conditions and some conditions are

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Rheumatoid
  • arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • trauma
  • genetics
  • Making the same wrist movements over and over.
  • Pregnancy

Basically Pressure on the median nerve causes carpal tunnel syndrome, This pressure can come from swelling or anything that makes the carpal tunnel smaller.


Symptoms typically start gradually and may extend up the arm during the night.

  • Pain, numbness, and tingling, in the first three fingers, and the thumb side of the ring finger (As the nerve is related to the first three fingers of the hand and half the ring finger and little finger given feeling by other nerve)
  • Weak grip

Risk factors associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Obesity
  • repetitive wrist work,
  • pregnancy, and
  • rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Diabetes mellitus


  • Diagnosis is mainly based medical history of the patient like  arthritis, hypothyroidism, or diabetes or even any recent injury to hands.
  • Diagnosis is also based on physical test.

Prevention and treatment

It can be prevented by habits such as avoiding repetitive stress, work modification through use of ergonomic equipment like mouse pads, Decrease usage of keyboard by using alternatives like digital pen, voice recognition, and dictation.


  • Physiotherapy,
  • steroids either orally or injected locally,
  • splinting,
  • surgical release of the transverse carpal ligament

Some home remedies for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Remedy 1

This remedy helps in giving temporary and quick relief from inflammation due to Carpel tunnel syndrome


  • Ice cubes
  • Seasable bag

How to prepare and use

Take some ice cubes and put them in a plastic seasable bag and wrap the bag in a towel and apply it on the affected area and leave it for 10 minutes.


  • Repeat this remedy for every one hour.

Remedy 2

This remedy helps in giving temporary and quick relief from inflammation due to Carpel tunnel syndrome


  • Epsom salt
  • Warm water

How to prepare and use

Take 1 cup of Epsom salt and mix it in deep tub with warm water and soak your hands and wrists in it for about 15 to 20 minutes


  • Repeat this remedy 2 to 3 times a week.
