Chikungunya an infectious epidemic disease

Chikungunya is an infectious disease caused by the chikungunya virus. It was first reported in 1952 and now it is identified in 60 countries according to WHO. The virus is sprea The virus is spread between people by two types of mosquitoes: Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti which bite in the day time. The virus may circulate within a number of animals including birds and rodents. The incubation period of the chikungunya virus ranges from one to twelve days

Symptoms include sudden onset with high fever and joint pain, rash like  maculopapular rash, head ache, fatigue, digestive complaints, and conjuctivitis and some times temporary damage to the liver may occur and rarely neurological disorders. The symptoms of chikungunya are similar to those of dengue and Zika, diseases spread by the same mosquitoes that transmit chikungunya.


It is transferred from human to human by mosquitoes. The females of Aedes Aegyptii and Aedes albopictus are the main species of mosquito that spread the disease. These mosquitoes bite through the day.


  • Chikungunya is diagnosed on the basis of clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory criteria
    • Clinically, acute onset of high fever and severe joint pain would lead to suspicion of chikungunya.
    •  Epidemiological criteria consist of whether the individual has traveled to or spent time in an area in which chikungunya is present within the last twelve days
    • Laboratory criteria include a decreased lymphocyte count consistent with viremia.
  • Blood test for viral RNA or antibodies

Prevention & Treatment 

  • There is no approved vaccine for Chikungunya, Treatment is directed primarily at relieving the symptoms, including the joint pain using anti-pyretics, optimal analgesics and fluids.  The only effective prevention method is to protection against contact with the disease-carrying mosquitoes and controlling mosquito populations.
  •  Mosquito control remedies are like
    • eliminating the standing water where mosquitos lay eggs and develop as larva
    • insecticides or biological control agents should added to standing water if it cannot be eliminated.

Remedy 1


  • Ice cubes

How to prepare and use

Take a handful of ice cubes and crush them a little. Wrap them up in a hand towel. Hold the compress over the painful area for 3 to 5 minutes.


  • Repeat a few times during the day as needed.

  • Turmeric : turmeric acts as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent to help deal with the pain.

How to prepare and use

Take 1/2 tea spoon of turmeric add it to a glass of hot milk and mix it well to avoid lump and drink it while in warm.

How to prepare and use

Add ginger in the teapot and pour boiling water in it. Let it steep for about 10 minutes. using a saucepan, strain the water to remove the ginger. Add fresh lemon juice and natural sweetener if you like.


  • Drink this ginger tea thrice a day.
