Acute Otitis Media(AOM) is a painful type of ear infection. It actually occurs when the place behind the eardrum known as middle ear becomes inflamed and infected.

Clutching the ear while wincing in pain (in toddlers)

Complaining about a pain in the ear (in older children)

Symptoms that are mainly noted in AOM

Felling Fullness in ear

Fluid drainage from the ear

Causes

The eustachian tube is the tube that runs from the middle of the ear to the back of the throat. An AOM actually occurs when patient’s eustachian tube traps fluid in the middle ear, swollen or blocked. The fluid which is blocked will be infected. In younger, the eustachian tube is shorter and more horizontal than it is in older children and adults. This will make most likely to become infected.

The Eustachian tube can become blocked or swollen for several reasons:

Allergies

A cold

The Flu

A sinus infection

Infected or enlarged adenoids

Cigarette smoke

Drinking while laying down (infants)

Treatment

Home care
apply a warm, moist washcloth over the infected ear
using over the counter ear drops for the pain relief
Taking OTC pain relievers such as ibuprofen
