Dysentery, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and treatment

Dysentery  is an intestinal inflammation, It is a type of gastroenteritis that results in diarrhea with blood. It can lead to mild or severe stomach cramps and severe diarrhea with mucus or blood in the feces. The mechanism is an inflammatory disorder of the intestine, especially of the colon.

Causes of Dysentery

It is caused by several types of infections such as bacteria, viruses, parasitic worms, or protozoa.

  • Infection with the Shigella bacillus, or bacterium, is the most common cause. Shigellosis can also spread because of tainted food, It is because mainly due to Poor hygiene.
  • Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica), an amoeba is also one of the common cause to cause Dysentery. The Amoeba develops due to Poor sanitation.
  • Some strains of Escherichia coli cause bloody diarrhea

Symptoms of Dysentery

  • a slight stomach-ache, cramping, Diarrhea with blood
  • Other symptoms may include fever, abdominal pain, and a feeling of incomplete defecation.
  • Symptoms of bacillary dysentery
    • Symptoms tend to appear within 1 to 3 days of infection. There is normally a mild stomach ache and diarrhea, but no blood or mucus in the feces. Diarrhea may be frequent to start with.Less commonly, may be:
      • blood or mucus in the feces
      • intense abdominal pain
      • fever
      • nausea
      • vomiting
  • Symptoms of amoebic dysentery.

    A person with amoebic dysentery may have:

    • abdominal pain
    • fever and chills
    • nausea and vomiting
    • watery diarrhea, which can contain blood, mucus, or pus
    • the painful passing of stools
    • fatigue
    • intermittent constipation


  • Physical exam : The mouth, skin, and lips may appear dry due to dehydration. Lower abdominal tenderness may also be present.
  • Stool and blood tests : A stool sample may be requested, especially if the patient has recently returned from the tropics. Cultures of stool samples are examined to identify the organism causing dysentery.


  • Treatment depends on infection, because infection may be caused due to Shigella or Entamoeba histolyca infection.
  • According to infection certain medications like antibiotics are given to the patient.

Some home remedies for Dysentery

Remedy 1


  • Orange :-  It encourages the growth of intestinal-friendly bacteria in the stomach.

How to prepare and use

Make and orange Juice and drink it. Consuming orange juice is a good option to stall dysentery.

Remedy 2


  • Castor oil
  • Ginger Juice
  • Warm water

How to prepare and use

Take 1 teaspoon of castor oil and add 1 tea spoon of ginger juice to it and now add 1/2 cup warm water. Mix all the ingredients well and drink the mixture.

Remedy 3


  • Butter milk
  • Rock salt
  • roasted cumin seed powder
  • black pepper powder

How to prepare and use

Take a glass of buttermilk and pinch of rock salt and now add 1/2 tea spoon of roasted cumin seed powder and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper powder mix all the ingredient well and have this mixture along with your meals


  • Drink this twice a day while breakfast and lunch.
