Genital herpes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) which is a genital infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. This thing about genital herpes are  individuals carrying herpes are unaware they have been infected and many will never suffer an outbreak, which involves blisters similar to cold sores. This STD causes herpetic sores, which are painful blisters that can break open and ooze fluid. About 16 percent of people between the ages of 14 and 49 have this STD.

HSV has been classified into two distinct categories,

  • HSV-1
  • HSV-2

Causes of Genital herpes are

The herpes simplex virus enter into body through mucous membranes. Mucous membranes are  thin layers of tissue that lie in opening of the body mainly found in nose, mouth and genitals. As the virus enters in to body incorporates in to body and multiply themselves and make the symptoms critical by adapting themselves in the environment. HSV-1 or HSV-2 can be found in infected people’s body fluids like saliva, semen, vaginal secretions.

Signs and Symptoms

  • In males, the lesions occur on the glans penis, shaft of the penis or other parts of the genital region, on the inner thigh, buttocks, or anus
  • In females, lesions appear on or near the pubis, clitoris or other parts of the vulva, buttocks or anus.
  • Blisters may appear in your mouth and on your lips, face, and anywhere else that came into contact with the infected areas.
  • Some common symptoms may include like
    • pain
    • itching
    • burning
    • some times discharge from penis or vagina
    • Rarely symtoms like
      • fever
      • headache
      • muscle pain
      • malasia
      • enlarged lymph nodes
      • Women may often experience painful urination
      • cervicitis
    • Herpetic proctitis (inflammation of the anus and rectum) is common for individuals participating in anal intercourse

Transmission

  • Genital herpes can be spread by viral shedding prior to and following the visual signs of symptoms.

Diagnosis

  • Visual examination of the herpes sores.
  • Blood test

Treatment

  • Antiviral drugs may help speed up the healing time of your sores and reduce pain
  • Medications may reduce the symptoms like tingling, itching, and other symptoms

Some home care to be followed like

  • Use mild cleansers when bathing or showering in warm water
  • Keep the infected site clean and dry
  • Wear loose, cotton clothing to keep the area comfortable
