Home remedies for Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis  , is inflammation of the outermost layer of the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid. It is also known as pink eye . Conjunctivitis may affect one or both eyes. A Small blood vessels in the conjunctiva are inflamed, they become swell and more visible, which causes the eyes to appear reddish. The affected eye may have increased tears or be “stuck shut” in the morning.

Causes of Conjunctivitis

  • Conjunctivitis may be caused due to
    • Viral : Adenoviruses is the most common cause of viral conjunctivitis
    • Bacterial :   Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae are most common causes of acute bacterial conjunctivitis.
    • Irritants like
      • shampoo
      • dirt
      • smoke
      • pool chlorine
    • Allergies like
      • dust
      • pollen
      • allergies with contact lens
    • a blocked tear duct in babies which called Neo-natal conjunctivitis
    • Less common causes are chlamydia and parasites
    • By eye contact with the infected person.

Both viral and bacterial conjunctivitis can be associated with sore throats and colds, which can also produce a thicker, yellow-green discharge.

Symptoms

  • Reddish eye
  • Scratchiness
  • Burning
  • A gritty, uncomfortable feeling in eyes
  • Eye discharge in form a crust during the night and can sometimes make it difficult to open the eyes in the morning

  • Excessive tears
  • sensitivity of light.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is often based on signs and symptoms. Occasionally a sample of the discharge is sent for culture

Prevention

  • Change pillowcases frequently
  • Keep your hands away from your eyes
  • Wash hands frequently
  • Handle and clean contact lenses properly
  • Don’t share towels, tissues or handkerchiefs
  • Don’t share eye cosmetics

Home remedies for Conjunctivitis

Remedy 1

Ingredients

  • Cool water : It reduces  itching and swelling, and gives comfort.
  • Cloth

How to prepare and use

Soak a clean, lint-free cloth in cool water, and wring out the excess water by gently press it over closed eyelid for a few minutes. (Use different cloth for both eyes)

Dosage

  • Repeat the process several times.

Remedy 2

Ingredients

  • Luke warm water : It is  particularly beneficial for bacterial or viral conjunctivitis. It also  reduces pain and inflammation in the eyes
  • Cloth

How to prepare and use

Soak a clean, lint-free cloth in lukewater water, and wring out the excess water by gently press it over closed eyelid for a few minutes. (Use different cloth for both eyes)

Dosage

  • Repeat the process 3 to 4 times a day

Remedy 3

Ingredients

  • Black tea bag : It helps in reducing itching and inflammation

How to prepare and use

Steep a black tea bag in lukewarm water and Set it aside until it cools. Place it over the infected eye for about 15 minutes.

Dosage

  • Repeat the process in regular intervals.
