Know about Cataract

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Protein builds up in the lens of your eye and makes it cloudy.  It can cause you to lose some of your eyesight. Cataracts often develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes.

Symptoms :

Signs and symptoms vary depending on the type of cataract, though considerable overlap occurs

  • Faded colors,
  • blurry vision,
  • halos around light,
  • trouble with bright lights,
  • trouble seeing at night
  • glare

 People with nuclear sclerotic or brunescent cataracts often notice a reduction of vision.

Causes :

  • Age : These form as you get older.
  • Congenital.; when babies are born with cataracts. They may be caused by infection, injury, or poor development in the womb and some other Congenital diseases are like
    • Congenital syphilis
    • Cytomegalic inclusion disease
    • Rubella
    • Cockayne syndrome
  • Traumatic : These form after an injury to the eye. Blunt trauma causes swelling, thickening, and whitening of the lens fibers.
  • Secondary ; These happen as a result of other medical conditions, like diabetes.They can also result from being around toxic substances, ultraviolet light, or radiation, or from taking medicines such as corticosteroids or diuretics.
    • Secondary to other eye diseases:
      • Retinopathy of prematurity
      • Aniridia
      • Uveitis
      • Retinal detachment
      • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • RadiationUltraviolet light, specifically UVB, has been shown to cause cataracts, and some evidence indicates sunglasses worn at an early age can slow its development in later life. Microwave radiation has also been found to cause cataracts.
  • Genetics : The genetic component is strong in the development of cataracts.
    • Genetic syndromes
      • Down syndrome
      • Patau syndrome
      • Edwards syndrome
  • Smoking and alcohol : Cigarette smoking has been shown to double the rate of nuclear sclerotic cataracts and triple the rate of posterior subcapsular cataracts
  • Medications : Some medications, such as systemic, topical, or inhaled corticosteroids, may increase the risk of cataract development.
  • Inadequate vitamin C : ow vitamin C intake and serum levels have been associated with greater cataract rates

Other diseases like Aminoaciduria or Lowe’s syndrome, Diabetes mellitusm, Fabry’s disease, Galactosemia cataract, Homocystinuria, Hyperparathyroidism, Hypoparathyroidism , Hypervitaminosis D, Hypothyroidism, Hypocalcaemia, Mucopolysaccharidoses, Wilson’s disease.

Complications

Serious complications of cataract surgery include retinal detachment and endophthalmitis. In both cases, patients notice a sudden decrease in vision and in some conditions they notice some pain.

Diagnosis

  • Doctor dilate your pupil to check the lens and other parts of the eye
  • Vision ability test

Treatment

  • glasses or contacts
  • cataract surgery :The surgeon will remove your lens and replace it with a man-made one.

Some Home remedies for cataract :

Remedy 1

Ingredients

  • Rose water
  • Lemon Juice

How to prepare and use

Mix one teaspoon of rosewater(gulabjal) with one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Add 10 drops of this to the eyes. This remedy provides benefit if cataract is in the starting stage.

Remedy 2

  • Almonds : It cures every type of eye problem and strengthen the vision.

How to prepare and use

Soak some almond overnight. In the morning, peel them and chew slowly with a glass of warm milk.
