Melasma-a skin Hyper-pigmentation

Melasma is a common skin problem it skin hyper pigmentation. The condition is tan or dark skin discoloration. It can affect anyone, melasma is particularly common in women, especially pregnant women  and those who are taking oral or patch contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications.

Symptoms

Melasma causes patches of discoloration. The patches are darker than your typical skin color, patches usually appear on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, chin. It can also occur on the neck and forearms

Causes of Risk factor of Melasma

  • Melasma is thought to be the stimulation of melanocytes, which is stimulatoin of female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone to produce more melanin pigments when the skin is exposed to sun.
  • Genetic predisposition also play a mojor role
  • Incidence Melasma can also seen in some Thyroid cases.
  • Melasma Suprarenale is a symptom of Addison’s disease.
  • Sun exposure can also cause melasma because the ultraviolet rays affect the cells that control pigment
  • birth control pills, pregnancy, and hormone therapy triggers melasma.

Diagnosis

  • A visual exam of the affected area is often enough to diagnose melasma
  • And in some conditions Melasma is usually diagnosed visually or with assistance of a Wood’s lamp
  • Some other different diagnosis methods are
    • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
    • Actinic lichen planus
    • Hydroquinone-induced exogenous ochronosis

Treatment

The discoloration usually disappears on its own over period of time. Usually several months after giving birth or stopping the oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy.

Continue exposure to the sun can ineffective the treatment. Treatments to hasten the fading of the discolored patches include:

  •  hydroquinone
  • Tretinoin,
  • Azelaic acid
  • Tranexamic acid
  • Cysteamine hydrochloride
  • Flutamide
  • Chemical peels

Remedy 1

Ingredients

  • Lemon

How to prepare and use

Take a lemon and Extract the juice from one fresh lemon.Apply it on the affected areas and gently rub it around for one or two minutes.Leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.

Dosage

  • Repeat the process twice a day for three weeks.

Remedy 2

Ingredients

  • Turmeric
  • Milk
  • gramflour

How to prepare and use

Take 5 table spoons of turmeric powder add with 10 table spoons of milk and mix it like a paste and now add one table spoon of gram flour to thicken the moisture. Apply this paste evenly on the affected area. Rinse it off with lukewarm water after 20 minutes after drying and pat dry with a clean towel.

Dosage

  • Repeat the process daily.

Remedy 3

Ingredients

  • Aleovera

How to prepare and use

Cut open an aloe vera leaf and extract the fresh gel.Apply the gel thoroughly on the affected area and gently massage for one or two minutes.Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Dosage

  • Repeat the process twice a day for few weeks.
