Headaches are your body’s response to physical or emotional stress. That stress can make the muscles in your head and neck contract to create tension headaches. Or it can make blood vessels constrict and later expand to produce migraines or vascular headaches. And if your sinuses are congested or infected, pounding headaches often result. Despite the discomfort, most headaches are temporary and respond quite nicely to do-it-yourself pantry treatments. Headaches can be triggered by stress, fatigue, allergies, eyestrain, poor posture, alcohol or drugs, low blood sugar, hormones, constipation and nutritional deficiencies. Your body is telling you that something needs to change, so begin to heed those signals. You may be wondering, how do you make a headache go away?

Home Remedies Of Headaches

1. Ginger

Ginger can help reduce inflammation of the blood vessels in the head, thus providing relief from a headache.

  • Apply a paste of one teaspoon of dry ginger powder, also add two tablespoons of water on the forehead for a few minutes.
  • You can also boil ginger powder or raw ginger in water, and inhale the vapor.

2. Peppermint Oil

In traditional and herbal medicine, peppermint oil is often used in place of acetaminophen and typical pain relievers because in some cases, it proves to be more effective, and it is all natural.

  • Mix three drops of peppermint essential oil in one tablespoon of almond oil, olive oil or just water. Massage your forehead and temples with it. Or, you can put crushed fresh peppermint leaves on your forehead.

3. Water

A lack of hydration in the body makes the blood vessels constrict and reduces the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain, which can cause a headache. If this is the reason behind your headache, you can usually relieve the symptoms very quickly by drinking a glass or two of water.

4. Caffeine

Caffeine is part of many over-the-counter pain relief medicines, but for someone who drinks caffeine regularly, and becomes dependent on it, taking that drug out of your system can cause rebound or withdrawal headaches, and some causes of headaches are exacerbated by the stimulating effects of caffeine.

5. Fish Oil

In terms of treating migraines and severe tension headaches, fish oil has been prescribed because of its anti-vasospasmodic properties and can relieve the pressure and pain associated with those terrible migraines.

6. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is also a sedative, and when used in the treatment of severe tension headaches or migraines, it not only relieves the tension and concentrate areas of pain but also helps to induce sleep and relaxation, which can further reduce the associated pain.

  • Put a few drops of lavender essential oil on a tissue and inhale it. You can also add two drops of lavender oil to two cups of boiling water and inhale the steam.

7. Basil

Basil works as a muscle relaxant, making it a helpful treatment for mild headaches caused by tense muscles. Plus, it has calming and analgesic effects.

  • Put three or four fresh basil leaves in a cup of boiling water and let it simmer for a few minutes. Optionally, add a little honey and then sip the tea slowly.

8. Cloves

Since they have a well known soothing effect, clove oil is often inhaled or applied as a paste for quick relief of headaches on the back of the neck or temples.
