Tennis Elbow- Causes,Symptoms,Diagnosis,Treatment

Tennis Elbow or Lateral epicondylitis is a condition in which outer part of the elbow becomes sore and tender at the lateral epicondyle. The forearm muscle and tendons become damaged due to repetitive overuse. This leads to pain and tenderness on the out side of the elbow. This condition is usually seen in carpenters and labours who swing a hammer or other tool with the forearm and is similar to the golfer’s elbow, which affects the medial epicondyles inside the elbow. Even playing tennies repetitively causes tennis elbow.   

Signs and symptoms:

Signs:  

Pain in outer part of the elbow

Point tenderness over the lateral epicondyle-a prominent part of the bone on the outer-side of the elbow

Pian for gripping

Pain on movements of the wrist

Pain in lifting movements 

Pain in the activities that use the muscle that extend the wrist (e.g) pouring a container of liquid, Lifting with the palm down, Sweeping especially where the wrist movement is required.

Symptoms:

Radiating pain from the out side of the elbow to the forearm and wrist 

Pain during extension of wrist

Weakness of forearm 

Painful grip when shaking hands or torquing a door knock

Causes:

Repetitive strain injury

Repetitively mis-hitting a tennis ball

A sudden forceful pull

Forceful extension cause more  

Prevention: 

Must decrease the time of playing

Stay in overall good physical shape 

Strength of the muscle of forearm— Upper arm, shoulders, Upper back, Increase muscle strength, increase stability of the elbow

Like other sports use equipment appropriate to the ability, body size and muscular strength 

Avoiding repetitive pulling or lifting

Diagnosis:

Inflammatory changes that are reversible 

Nonreversible pathologic changes to origin of the muscles

Rupture of ECRB muscle origin

Secondary changes such as fibrosis or calcification

Treatment:

Icing the elbow

using an elbow strap

Taking Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs 

Performing range of motion exercise

Getting physical therapy

Having Injections of steroids
